Barca sign Gomes
Barcelona shocked the football world tonight when they announced that they were signing Andre Gomes. The transfer has come relatively out of the blue. There were several clubs in for his signature, Juventus and Real Madrid among them. But Barca have swooped in under their noses and struck a deal with Valencia that Marcareport is worth €50 million. He’ll sign a five-year deal when his holiday finishes.
Gomes gets an extended break after winning the European Championships with Portugal in France. The highly-rated midfielder didn’t stand out in that tournament but was consistently selected by Fernando Santos. One area of the pitch that Barca don’t lack talent is midfield.
Knock-on effects
One would presume that Luis Enrique will look at Gomes as a first-choice reserve to the likes of Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic. Not to mention the relatively newly-established Sergio Roberto.
It also appears to certainly signal the end of Arda Turan’s time with the club. His January move from Atletico Madrid seemed silly when it was announced and seems even more so now. The Spanish champions are on the lookout for a forward.
One question that this transfer begs us to ask is about the knock-on effects. With both Juventus and Real supposedly after Gomes, it could affect any transfer involving Paul Pogba. A deal with United looks on, but if Juventus can’t get an adequate replacement then things could change. With Madrid missing out on the Valencia, they might up their game in the record-breaking race for Pogba.
